healthy neighborhoods create
with each other!

A Rainup neighborhood initiative aims to reduce the urban heat island effect and promote biodiversity in the neighborhood. Free, clean rainwater is no longer diverted to the sewer system, but retained on green roofs or in community gardens, providing enough water for plants to develop healthily and cool the neighborhood.

Over 2500 liters of rainwater storage capacity

September 9, 17 enthusiastic neighbors in Alphen aan den Rijn provided their sheds with a water-storing green roof. Together they collect over 2500 liters of rainwater when it falls and cool the neighborhood through natural evaporation. The appearance of the neighborhood from the homes of the residents provides an oasis of green and thus a place for biodiversity. This makes positive use of several major challenges in cities: more biodiversity, giving water a place when it falls and cooling the roofs.

"This is more than just an aesthetic change; it is a community effort to make the neighborhood more sustainable and livable," said Leonie, one of the initiators.

1000 liters of rainwater storage capacity

In the Kerk en Zanen neighborhood, they started by installing 1 water-storing green roof on a resident's barn. After the installation, other neighbors were also immediately enthusiastic and decided to find out whether there would be joint interest in greening more sheds in the street. Last September 16, several barns and outbuildings were installed with our water-storing green roof (27 l/m²).

Marije: "Besides the fact that the roof looks good for us, and the neighbors overlooking our roof, we are also contributing to a cooler environment and more biodiversity with our (blue) green roof."

frequently asked questions
How do I know if my roof is suitable for a green roof?
The load-bearing capacity of a roof is important because it indicates the capacity of a roof to support the weight of all the elements resting on it. This includes not only the roofing material itself, but also any snow loads, rainwater, roof installations (such as air conditioning systems), and any persons moving on the roof. If a roof does not have sufficient load-bearing capacity, it can lead to structural damage, leaks, collapses or other dangerous situations. Assessing the load-bearing capacity of a roof is a complex task and requires expertise in structural engineering and architecture. It is important to consult a professional engineer or architect to assess a roof's load-bearing capacity and recommend possible modifications if needed. Especially if you are considering a water-storing green roof. Rainup does not advise on the load-bearing capacity of a specific roof, as this depends on many factors, such as the construction, materials and design of the roof. It is essential to leave this to qualified professionals who can perform a thorough on-site assessment if required.
Are there additional costs beyond the water retention green roof package?
The Rainup water-retaining green roof is delivered via pallet transport. Depending on the surface area, we calculate the number of pallets and thus the transport costs. If you specify the shipping address when requesting a quote, we will send you the square meter price in a personalized quote that includes the shipping costs.
What is a neighborhood initiative?
By collectively choosing to install water-storing green roofs, you make a big difference when it comes to greening in residential neighborhoods, for example. The neighborhood initiative aims to reduce the urban heat island effect and promote biodiversity in the neighborhood. Free, clean rainwater is no longer diverted to the sewer system, but is retained on the roofs, providing enough water for plants to develop healthily and cool the neighborhood. It's more than just an aesthetic change; it's a community effort to make your neighborhood more sustainable and livable.
In what ways are neighborhood initiatives supported?
Globally, municipalities and water boards have an important task to make cities climate-proof. Municipalities often have ambitious goals to green and thus remain healthy cities for its residents. Neighborhood initiatives often receive support from the municipality in the form of subsidies.
What is the benefit of a neighborhood initiative?
Besides the fact that the effect is greater if you build green roofs with more neighbors, it also has financial benefits. If more neighbors participate in the project, costs can be shared.
Is Rainup helping build the water-storing green roofs?
Rainup supported in setting up the neighborhood initiative. On this page you will find a guide to help you or your neighbors get started on setting up a green neighborhood initiative together. Rainup provides the materials and clear instructions for construction at your chosen time. The water-storing green roofs are installed by the neighbors themselves (jointly).
How does a neighborhood initiative also have a positive effect on social ties in neighborhoods?
These initiatives can have a positive impact on the quality of life in a neighborhood and strengthen the bond between residents. You get to know the neighbors in the neighborhood better and can mean something to the neighbors who are not able to take up a project like this themselves. Healthy greenery has a positive impact on the lives of elderly people, for example, if you as a neighbor can contribute to the installation of the green roof at an elderly local resident, it makes everyone feel good!
